Big Hawk Shot By More Than One Person, Paul Wall and Bun B Remember Rapper
As previously reported, Big Hawk (born John Edward Hawkins) was shot and killed near a friend's home in south Houston late Monday night (May 1). According to reports, Hawk had gone to the aforementioned friend's house to play dominos but when he got there; his friend wasn't home. Hawk then went to the side of the house, where he was shot multiple times and succumbed to his wounds. Authorities believe Hawk was shot by more than one person.
"This is an incident where you've got a victim shot multiple times, possibly by more than one suspect," John Cannon, Houston Police spokesman, told the Houston Chronicle. "We have no indication that it was a robbery. His vehicle was still at the scene. The only thing we have to go on is a witness who saw a small, white compact vehicle leaving the area right after the shooting."
Hawk's death came as a major surprise to many in the Houston rap community who described the rapper as a "kind hearted person who was a big brother and mentor to Houston's local talent."
"It's got to either be a case of mistaken identity or an attempted robbery by somebody who didn't realize who they were robbing," Paul Wall told the Houston Chronicle. "Hawk was all about positivity and bringing people together."
Gun-related tragedy is nothing new to Hawk's family. His brother and fellow MC Fat Pat (born Patrick Hawkins) was shot and killed in 1998.
Various media outlets have tried to tie the brothers' murders but UGK member Bun B, who was a close friend to Hawk, quickly shot down media speculation during a recent radio interview.
"I don't want anybody out there to think that his [Hawk's] career choice had anything to do with what happened," explained Bun during the interview. "He was a stand up guy. I saw reporters on TV trying to correlate his murder to Fat Pat's...This was a young black man trying to do good by his family and his brother that was taken away, too early in his life. Let's not get over the fact this was a husband, a father, a son and good friend to a lot people who was taken way in a tragic incident."
Hawk, 36, was survived by wife and two children. His funeral arrangements are currently underway.
