LL Cool J Changes Clothes, Steps Into Todd Smith
The 38-year-old hip hop icon (born James Todd Smith) debuted his line during New York's Fashion Week at the Carlton Hotel and unlike other rappers, Uncle L is not endorsing hoodies, baggy jeans and sweat suits.
"I would like a person to look rich, to look successful but not be overly ornate," LL told MSNBC.com at the presentation of his clothing line. "I want to leave room for the everyday guy to upgrade."
Named for its creator, the Todd Smith clothing line boats a high-end look which incorporates classy tailored looks with lavish fabrics. The men's collection is overseen by Jeremy Brandrick of Dolce & Gabbana and the women's collection is helmed by Matthew Priestly, formerly of Marni.
"This is a long way from the rapper," said LL who is credited for putting lines like TROOP and FUBU on the map. He plans to center the marketing of his clothesline towards the clothing rather than LL Cool J.
"LL's a rapper," he said. "Todd Smith is a brand."
As previously reported, LL is also gearing up for the release of his 12th album, Todd Smith, which is due out in March 21st. The album will feature appearances from Mary J. Blige, 112 and Teairra Mari.
