Cassidy Speaks From Behind Bars
Last week, the Philadelphia wordsmith was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and assault. Common Please Judge Jane Cutler Greenspan sentenced the rapper (born Barry Reese) to 11 ½ to 23 months in prison for his offense. Since Cassidy has already served 8 months in jail, he may be released before May.
This morning (February 1), Cassidy let the public know his thoughts in a statement he released via his defense attorney, Fortunato Perri:
"While I am pleased that I was cleared of the murder charges, my satisfaction is not long-lasting, because of the death of someone who I considered to be my friend, Des Hawkins. And while I am eager to resume my career as a recording artist, writer and performer, I am also eager to be reunited with my family, friends, and fans. I too share the important message stated in court by Des' dad, who urged all parents to love their children, and to be there for them. As the father of a young child myself, spending much time on the road and in the studio, away from home, I am relieved that I will soon be home for family and my career."
Cassidy's friend and Full Surface CEO Swizz Beatz spoke with SOHH last week regarding his artist's trial, today Swizz shared his thoughts with fans once again, addressing both Cassidy's current situation as well as his next steps in regards to music.
"I'd like to first thank radio and all of his fans for their love and support during this time, and let everyone know that when Cassidy gets out, do not expect us to promote this situation as a cocky and violent situation, but as a blessed situation," Swizz said via a statement. "Cass will continue to make great music, but in a positive way, educating the youth that violence is never the answer. We'll do the rest of the talking with the music."
In expectation of Cassidy's upcoming release, Full Surface/J Records also revealed plans to drop the single "Cassidy (The Anthem)" on February 28. The song was previously recorded but not included on Cassidy's second album, I'm a Hustla. The single is already available as a ringtone as of yesterday (January 31) and the digital single will be available for download on February 14.
