T.I.’s MTV Show Costs Viacom Millions Over Dead Body
During a February 2009 episode, T.I. visited the dead body of Joseph Williams’ atThe Haugabrooks Funeral Home in downtown Atlanta, a scene that MTV aired. Following the episode back in 2011, Williams’ family sued Viacom for multiple claims including invasion of privacy, violation of likeness and negligent misrepresentations about the decedent.
After three years of litigation, Viacom rejected a settlement on June 29th “for an amount that, even after deducting from the $5 million policy limit the extensive defense costs incurred during more than three years of litigation, was within the $5 million policy limit of the Insurance Policy,” according to a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. While their insurance policy covers $3 million for “Each Loss”, Viacom alleges that Williams’ family filed multiple charges and thus the company suffered multiple losses, each with high costs.
T.I. nor any of his affiliated companies were mentioned in the suit as being financial responsible for the episode’s airing.
