Rap Photo Shoot Turns Bloody, Man Gets Jail Time For Killing Bystander
According to Washington's KXLY ABC 4 TV, Kevin Culp along with three other men, were leaving the St. Joseph's cemetery, in SpokaneValley in 2004 after taking photos for a rap album cover when Culp picked up a pistol that had been used as a prop in the photographs. When he pulled the trigger, the gun went off leaving Cedric Sykes who was driving at the time paralyzed and on life support. Sykes was hospitalized and died of his injuries on May 5, 2004.
Kevin Culp plead guilty last week just before he was to stand trial on a second degree manslaughter charge that resulted in the shooting death of Sykes.
Sykes' mother Karen told the court Thursday that after being in the hospital for three weeks her son asked her to take him off life support.
"There's no words to describe the feeling when you learn your son has been mortally wounded and yet hangs on to life by threads," Karen Sykes told the court.
Judge Maryann Moreno sentenced Culp to three years as part of his plea agreement. He was previously sentenced for to up to seven years in prison in Idaho for vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of three of six family members riding in a minivan that he collided with near Athol, Idaho on July 23, 2005.
