Kanye, Nas, Rakim & KRS-ONE Celebrate 25 Years of Air Force 1's

ImageLast night (December 10), hip-hop stars Kanye West, Nas, Rakim and KRS-ONE stepped to the mic to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nike's Air Force 1 sneaker in New York City's Gotham Hall.

Originally issued in 1982, the Air Force 1 sneaker was the first basketball shoe to offer Nike Air technology. The performance from KRS-ONE, Rakim, Kanye West and Nas marked one of the evening's highlights. The four MC's came together for the first time to perform an original track produced by Rick Rubin.

"Those that know the history of KRS-ONE's recordings will recall a song called 'Advance.' We signed to this label to put this single out, and what I remember was the advance. What came back from signing this contract was a pair of AIR FORCE 1's," KRS-ONE said via statement. "You know, believe it or not, we were satisfied. We got a fresh pair of Air Force 1s and it was dope. I rhymed, and I got a fresh pair of Air Force 1s. The mentality was that my rhymes bring value, and the point was that Air Force 1s had value."

As an added attraction, Nike displayed 1,040 pairs of Air Force 1's which were pulled together from a combination of Nike archives and key collectors who were in attendance. In addition to showcasing highly sought after Air Force 1's from the past, Nike also featured the currently unreleased Air Force 25, Nike's newest performance basketball shoe. The Air Force 25 will be introduced in 2007.
